Searching the universe for the ideal smoothie-style sour ale, Skygazer finally figures out how to make the type of beer sour again- by staying the hell away from the milk sugars!
Kicking off their Space Pixels non-lactose sour smoothie ale, the Cherry Mango Pineapple blend of beer starts with a rusty mauve appearance, somewhat chunky with its haze, the beer even looks like pureed fruit sitting in the glass. As a radiant scent of tropical fruit, dark fruit and underlying cidery scents, the smoothie is starting to come alive. Hitting the palate with juicy fruitiness, the early palate is chocked full of cereal, fructose, taffy and sorbet.
The blend of cherry, mango and pineapple align on the middle palate with a fruit cocktail of flavor with cherries taking the lead. The foundation of tartness relies on white wine, crabapple, lime, lemon, gooseberry and seemingly cranberry and rhubarb. As the ale turns the corner to close, the tartness outlasts any sweet fruitiness for a sour ale that finishes like sour ale.
Full bodied for sour ale but fairly moderate for more smoothie-types of sour ale, Space Pixels finishes fruity and tart with a linger of peppery fruit skins, peels and seeds in a tangy, tantalizing and flavorful session that shows an off-clean level of sweetness yet is refreshing still.
