It's the most... wonderful time... for a beer! And if you think that holiday ales are limited to the stalwart winter warmer, then think again. Skygazer whips out a Watercolors series beer, sour in nature, then piles it full with cranberry, cherry, tangerine, pomegranate, gingerbread and marshmallow for a new tradition this holiday.
Their Watercolors Creamee series takes their holiday ale to a murky and muddy rusty mauve place, pouring densely before crowning with a creamy foamy cap. As the nose billows over with fruit cocktail, wine, cider, citrus, berry and cream, light wafts of cereal and burlap provide waves of fragrances. Once the sour ale splashes against the tongue, a creamy sweetness of taffy, pastry, cream candy and fructose provides a malty sweet upstart to the session.
As the individual fruits of cherry, tangerine and cranberry align on the middle palate, their bold red berry character shines. Underneath the fruit additions lies a supportive tartness of lime, lemon, grapefruit, gooseberry and passionfruit give the juiciness of added fruits a tangier and winier character. All wrapped in an envelope of light ginger and sweet cream, the late taste is soothing, pulpy and creamy.
Medium-full and certainly bigger bodied for a sour ale, the smoothie sour ale offers enough sourness to to appease traditional sour ale lovers but is fruity enough to attract non-beer fans. The creamy balance offers balance against the sourness and gives the session a light candied character. Finishing with a hint of sourdough and burlap, the session finishes sweet and tart with a little gingerbread sass.
