New NA stout (er... "dark brew" - I don't think they're legally allowed to use words like stout. Might confuse angry souse-heads or something) from Two Roots. I believe these were canned right around the dawn of the new year. Anyway...
It certainly looks the part. Dark doodoo butter body. The head is maybe a shade or two lighter than I'd expect from a stout, but it laces up nicely and there's not much to complain about. Smells a little odd. Mild wort notes and just like a pot of fresh cooked barley. Very little roast character. Yeah, swirl it about and stick your schnauze in there and it just smells like raw, uncooked grains. Maybe a little vegetal too. It's like a pot of vegan soup that I have no interest in eating. Not crazy about the nose at all. Taste is a completely different animal, fortunately. Mild roasted grain notes up front, followed by bitter baker's chocolate. Bitterness lingers well into what is an incredibly dry finish. Hrmm. It's not terrible, but it is awful light overall. And it's certainly not going to replace Athletic's All Out as my go-to cold weather NA beer.
