The Scottish were some of the first in the UK to brew lager beers. Prior to this, they brewed ales at lower than normal temperatures with small amounts of dark malts. The Scotch ale is a higher strength version of this type of ale with clean malt aromas and flavors and a touch of crystal malt. Malt sweetness dominates this beer’s flavor.

a really nice example of the style here, a mellow almost lagered feel to this deep caramel colored brew, frothy headed and mostly clear in the glass. it doesnt smell as strong as it is, well hidden strength for sure, its not really part of the equation here except for how this makes me feel. subtle smoke and cooked sweet malt to it, minerals and soil, light cocoa and rich amber character, but its crisp kind of, full but not sugary to me, less so than anticipated anyway, and well below average for the style, especially in the finish. neat bready richness, things like bran muffin and coffee cake and then a cool earthiness like fall leaves and wet wood, they really nailed the old world depth of this, even from the yeast side, this is a great recipe without a doubt. not enormous on the body, this has a nice drinkability to it, and works perfectly well with smoked meats and after dinner this time of year when the leaves are on the ground and the cool winds are blowing. this has a lot more going on than many domestic examples of the style do. yummy stuff!

Poured from 22oz bomber into a dimpled mug.
Appearance: rich, muddy brown with two fingers of frothy tan foam atop. A good look for this style.
Smell: quite yeasty with a big underlying maltiness and a dose of alcoholic heat. Not bad, but a little bit messy.
Taste: right up front is a bit of smokiness, followed by a big malt flavor that finishes nicely sweet. The smokiness stays throughout, and although there is some argument over the authenticity of smoke in a Scotch ale, I like its effect here. This beer is complex and way less messy than the aroma would suggest.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a moderately low level of carbonation and an OK creaminess.
Overall: I think this beer is a good take on the style; it's tasty and drinkable, despite its ABV, and while sweet it's not overly cloying or fatiguing on the palate.

Great looking brew. Dark brown with nitro-like head and lacing. Husky grain nose. Super creamy mouthfeel with a chewy body. Tangy and malty with moderate sweetness, some toffee, brown bread, dark grape and touch of floral. Biscuity and nutty notes. Overall, good, but it's malt backbone is a bit too thin.
