Mainstay Independent Brewing Co. "Bemuse"
750ml brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
$15 at the brewery on 2 November 2019
Look: Slightly hazy yellow gold body beneath a massive head of bright white foam that's bolstered by streams of very fine bubbles rising from below. It displays excellent head retention, but only fair lacing which is a little bit odd.
Smell: The Belgian yeast comes through clearly with some spiciness, earthiness, herbs, and a bit of a plastic-like phenolic backed by a light note of honey atop a soft malt base. I thought that perhaps it would be more fruity, but it is not.
Taste: The flavor delivers the same yeastiness found in the aroma atop a basic, grainy and lightly bready malt base that's backed by a solid bitterness. The honey flavor is limited but there is some floral character to it. That may or may not be from hops, but there's a definite bit of herbal character that is. The alcohol never shows but at 6.7% abv it really shouldn't. It finishes crisp, bone dry, and spicy with the spiciness and some earthiness lingering for quite some time.
Feel: Medium bodied and gently but effervescently crisp.
Overall: The label is quite clear that this is a "Belgian-style golden ale" that's "spicy, dry and champagne like" but I fear that many people will think that as a honey beer it'll be much sweeter than it is. It's certainly not that, and to be honest, I find it a touch bitter for what it is, or at least with a bitterness that's not quite as smooth as it could be. In the end it lives up to its promise and for fans of the style, forgetting about the honey, it's worth trying.
