Re-inspired by a recent trip to Hawaii, Niu came about. The recipe has come full-circle. Over a decade of experience combining coconut and beer and brewing dark beers, we brewed Niu to be sort of a peek behind the curtain at Phase Three. Big, adjuncted, dark beers are extremely labor intensive, involve a lot of planning and unfortunately, don’t offer a lot of drinkability. Niu is 6.5%. It’s not meant to be a big pastry stout/porter, however, it’s not small. The base porter is light, but uses full-flavored UK malted grains, including Maris Otter, crystal malts and chocolate malts. It’s rich, but refreshing. It satisfies a dark, adjuncted beer craving but in a way where a pint of it is appropriate.

16 ounce pour - $8.50 at Woodstock Beer Market in Woodstock, Georgia.
Appearance: Dark brown, near black with some rubied gem tones at the edges. Thin (from a hearty pour), khaki, creamy-looking head with some staying power.
Smell: Shaved chocolate, toasted coconut with roasty-toasty maltiness hinting coffee, caramel along with some dark fruitiness.
Taste: Toasted breadcrust, roasted malts. Moderately sweet blend of caramel, chocolate and cafe au lait. Subtle but appreciable coconut quality with a less is more approach. Slight dark fruitiness. The various flavors meld wonderfully on the lightly creamy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Subtly creamy mouthfeel.
Overall: Quite enjoyable. Even without the coconut, it'd be a very well-made porter.

A: The beer is close to being black in color but has brownish hues near the edges of the glass when held up to a bright light. It poured with a thin collar of off white bubbles around the edge and delicate lacing covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of toasted coconut are present in the nose along with hints of chocolate.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that the coconut flavors are a bit stronger. There is a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The aromas and flavors in this porter won't blow you away, but it is a beer that is very easy to drink.

16oz can. No dating information found.
Deep brown colored body, which looks to be clear. Fluffy light tan head. Rings of lacing left behind.
Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and coconut.
Taste is burnished dark malts, with chocolate and slight coconut. The close to burned malts express a dark coffee flavor. Steady roll off of coffee and dark chocolate in the aftertaste.
Thinner mouth feel. Good carbonation.
Solid porter that expresses slightly sour/bitter, but has the oily coconut sweeter note.

Phase Three does very well in the dark beer market. Usually I'm grabbing their stouts, but here we have a coconut porter. It is a true porter bringing that light body. Not really bitter, not really sweet. The coconut comes through in the smell and oily addition.

I wanted to love this, but I just like it. A good, solid porter, but it doesn't have anything to make it stand out, which is a shame. Maybe a little espresso note, or more heavy roasting would round this out. It has a pretty carbonation forward mouthfeel, which is odd for a porter.

Slightly thin body with medium light carbonation.
Aroma was raw and toasted coconut, malt, dark chocolate and coffee.
Taste was a bit sweet yet it also had a fermented sour taste in the background. There was raw and toasted coconut along with coffee, malt, and dark chocolate.
Really well done dessert beer that was flavorful as well as a decent body.

poured from a 16oz crowler into a willi becher pint glass. pours a very dark brown with lighter brown edges. two fingers of sandy foam which fade to a collar around the rim of the glass. smells of faint coconut, roast, mild chocolate and coffee. taste is similar with a slightly roasty, slightly bitter porter finish. mouthfeel is medium to full. it’s not thin by any means but it’s not too thick that it makes it un-sessionable. really delicious coconut porter. the coconut is subtle but i don’t mean that in a negative way. rather, it melds with the base porter to create an easy drinking experience that doesn’t trade off flavor for drinkability.
