For Eunoia 19 we brewed a Imperial Smoked Wheat Stout (the same base beer that makes up about 20% of Minutiae 2024), and put it in Bliss maple bourbon and Skinny Stick Maple bourbon barrels. The idea was to have the subtle smoke character in the stout play with the residual maple sweetness remaining in the casks to offer something fitting for a cold Winter night.
After 22 months in maple bourbon casks the stout picked up subtle notes of maple syrup, but really drew out the charr, oak , and bourbon character that plays very nicely with the smoked wheat malt we used in the base beer. Not overly smokey or syrupy in any way, just a nice addition to an otherwise very familiar Phase Three barrel-aged stout profile.

Thanks to StephenBechler for this 500ML bottle & eternal damnation to whoever inserted the wax removing thing. It didn’t work. Epic battle ensued. I won without spilling blood. Victory.
The pour is dense black with a short, dull, quick-lived mocha head. The nose is a surprise: all big, sweet malts. No hint of any depth.
Eunoia: Batch 19 is an argument for high school band. Everything advertised is present, hitting the appropriate notes & not pissing off Mr. James. A little maple, a little bourbon, a supporting latticework of heavy malt & the smokiness. Just a touch too much of the latter keeps the ecstasy down. Full. Thick. The slightly larger bottle size isn’t unwieldy.
Scratching the piggy underbelly of excellent; a very good beer.

Poured from a 500mL crowler into a Courtyard & Cellar mini snifter. Fairly smokey on the nose with some subtle maple and bourbon. A little medicinal but mostly smoke, chocolate and bourbon. Taste is chocolate with subtle smoke and maple. Full mouthfeel. Really interesting. Also good. Maybe more interesting than good. I like the concept more than the result but it was still solid.
