heres the thing, yeah this fruited version is way better than the original i had some time ago, but the brewery has clearly improved their quality overall, so im not necessarily sure that its the grapefruit that makes this so much better, to me the base beer is objectively improved from what it used to be, and that alone accounts for this being much improved, the grapefruit is just a summery bonus that gives a little depth to this and makes the hops pop a bit more, really refreshing and clean brew, drinkable for its size, and honestly among the better beers i have had from these guys, nice to see them putting their best foot forward now. the clarity is lovely here, a nice rich looking honey color with some sparkle. it smells and tastes like northwest hops, pine and orange peel and some dankness, the grapefruit accentuates all of it and delivers a bit of bitterness of its own, which helps this drink like a classic and finish boldly. the fruit is natural not sweet at all, and dosed in a way that leaves the hops in the drivers seat, well restrained, a fine accent to an already solid brew. medium grain weight to this, clean ferment, warms up just fine, and really is a well rounded brew. leaps and bounds ahead of the original and where it was at when i first tried it. great to see! i need to revisit the original now too that things have improved so much here...
