Czech Dark Lager (Tmavý Ležák)

Dark color and creamy head. The aroma is dominated by dark chocolate, slightly coffee and caramel with hints of dried prunes and liquorice. Hop bitterness beautifully balances the sweeter malt base.

On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Very dark reddish brown colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Roasty aroma and flavour, coffee notes, dry and "clean" dark lager flavour.

Pours a cloudy, deep mahogany coloration with a reddish hue and a medium, creamy head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt and floral, herbal and spicy hops, with hints of chocolate as well. Taste is a good balance of roasted, caramel malt and floral, herbal, spicy hops, with some chocolate and hints of coffee, dark fruit, with accents of plum, licorice and black pepper as well. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted malt, herbal hops, chocolate and black pepper lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a rather nice dark lager with a surprising depth of flavor and full body for the ABV. It's quite hoppy for a dark lager as well, with some distinct floral, herbal and spicy hops balancing out the sweet caramel and lightly roasted malt base very well, while some chocolate, and lighter coffee, licorice, spice and dark fruit lend a certain complexity to this. I never had a Czech Dark Lager before and I have no idea how authentic this is, coming from more of modern Czech brewery, but it certainly made for an enjoyable drinking experience with an interesting malt/hop balance for a dark lager.
