We love brewing lagers and we love brewing with New Zealand hops. You know how this ends. Taumata, or Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu by its full name taken from an actual hill on New Zealand’s northern island, is our Nelson Sauvin-hopped lager.
We kept it for ourselves in the tank as long as we could and we’re releasing what’s left of it. Crystal clear, lightly malty and refreshingly fruity due to light dry-hopping, it sports an aroma of gooseberry, lychee and lime. Its brisk bitterness allows you to enjoy a mug or two, so you’ll have enough time to learn the whole name and order the next one in style!

Pours a clear, deep golden coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of doughy, biscuity malt and grassy, berry hops, with notes of white grape and lychee. Taste is a great balance of doughy, biscuity malt and fruity, grassy, slightly spicy hops, with berry and slightly tropical notes of white grape, gooseberry and lychee, with just a hint of white pepper coming through as well. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some gooseberry, lychee and white pepper lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and medium/strong carbonation.
This makes for a pretty nice, modern interpretation of a Czech Pilsner dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin, which comes through beautifully here with those typical, slightly tart white grape and gooseberry notes, as well as hints of tropical accents and white pepper. Finishes quite crisp, with a good bitterness, making for a very refreshing and enjoyable brew.
