Some people like their hoppy beers on the sweeter side and the Hop Cow should please exactly this audience. As if creamy, hazy base with some lactose and intense hopping by Sabro, Mosaic and Azacca focused on lower bitterness wasn't enough, we added our favourite Mexican variety of vanilla to create a perfect milkshake for beer fans (or beer for milkshake fans). Aromas of coconut, mango and obviously vanilla will make you want to put your favourite flip-flops on for the complete drinking experience.

Copenhagen 29/10 2023. 50 cl can from Best of Beers web-shop. The can in spotty cow-hide design.

Pours opaque pale yellow with a big white head. Stable. Settles a big thick crown of foam obscuring the surface of the beer. Massive lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a sweet, slightly candy-like odor mingling with a more subtle scent of citrus fruit. Sweet pale malts, lactose, peach and strawberry ice cream.

Medium strong carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, lively and tingling texture.

Flavor is medium intensewith a rather strong sweetness followed by a somewhat lighter bitterness. Aftertaste is tart with a notable sweet undertone. Lingers for a while. Finish is sweet ice cream.

Pleasant and sweetish.

Pours a hazy, bright orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical, citrus hops, with notes of papaya, pineapple and grapefruit, with hints of vanilla coming through as well. Taste is a good balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly grassy and spicy hops, with tropical and citrus notes of papaya, pineapple, coconut and grapefruit, as well as hints of vanilla and lactose. Finishes with a light bitterness and some papaya, pineapple and grapefruit lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I'm still not sure if I ever had a "proper" Milkshake IPA and am unsure what the style is really supposed to entail. I've only ever had any from Europe, which were basically NEIPAs with lactose and sometimes other additives. This falls squarely under that umbrella as well. It's basically a NEIPA with vanilla and lactose, which are both rather subtle though. While that's fine by me, I'm not sure how according to style it is. Mouthfeel is standard NEIPA fare as well, soft but not especially thick or chewy. Overall, this makes for pretty nice NEIPA that's heavy on the tropical notes and slightly sweeter than usual due to the vanilla, with very little bitterness coming through in the finish.
