Taster at the brewery. Dark mahogany pour, clear, small beige bubbly head. Aroma is earthy, peaty. Taste is dry, woody, earthy. Seems thin, but pretty decent.

i am fairly certain all their beer is made in boise now and that they dont even exist in montana anymore, although i do not know that for sure, should probably be listed under boise location now. anyway, its been awhile since i had anything from them so i grabbed a sixer of this for our corned beef cookup this past weekend. i figured something basic and malty and sweet would be good to cook the meat in, and i could drink the rest. the plan worked to perfection as the beef came out silly good, and the beer is plenty drinkable. i like seeing a scotch ale at this more modest abv too, extends the day a bit. this has good clarity, a deep bronze to chestnut color, reddish in the light, and an average head on it. smells and tastes nutty to me, some brown sugar too but not as sweet as some of these get, earthy enough from the grain to be balanced just on the malt side, and there is just a little bit of a bready yeast thing giving it some depth, very clean overall, seemingly of a higher quality than some of their other cans have been in the past. the flavor is very solid, not too sweet nor too deep or rich or caramelized on the grain, room for minerals and yeast to show themselves, and the body isnt too big either, this drinks easier than most, and has no flaws to hide. its maybe a tad safe, but ill take safe and well done over robust and sloppy with a style like this, and even though this will never be my favorite type of beer to drink, i was impressed (and admittedly just a tad surprised) how well done this was. it also was a fine companion to the beef that cooked in it, no surprise there. overall this was good enough to get me to grab another white dog six pack in the near future...

12oz can from the bro; pours mostly clear amber/copper with a fluffy off-khaki head; lots of sweetness on this one, reminiscent of toffee and maybe some caramel. Light toasty bitterness and smooth malty backbone.

From notes taken 11/13/16:

Okay, I’ve got a story to tell you before I review. I’ve heard nothing but good about White Dog, but, that was from people who have had their offerings on tap (the brewery is only a couple hours from where I live). I’m sure, on tap, most of their stuff is pretty decent. But so far, everything of theirs I have purchased, canned, has been middling at best. And I am certain I didn’t buy them after they got old. I got these as my usual place within a week of when they first arrived. The IPA and Blonde were both drinkable, at least. But still not what they should have been. This Scotch Ale is the third one from them I’ve gotten. I was optimistic as I usually enjoy the style. But this was almost rancid, rotten. A shame since I paid $11 for a six-pack. I had one out of the can the first day I bought them, suffered through it. I am taking one for the team to review this second one. I am not sure I won’t drain-pour the rest. I don’t make such negative statements lightly. Only on one other occasion has a supposedly fresh beer been this disgusting to me, and in very much the same way (it was a malt-forward Vienna Lager, this is a malt-forward Scotch Ale, so no surprise). I’d have given the “Taste” a 2, tops, if I had reviewed it then and there. Now time for my actual review.

Appears a nice consistent, semi-opaque ruby. Darkest brown in indirect light. Capped with biscuity tan medium-retention delicate fluff. Aroma is weak, which given it is not very good, is a good thing. Cleanish, a pinch of toast and caramel, but some of that moldy character that’s much stronger on the palate, as well. Palate is surprisingly good in a glass. Either it was the one can that was particularly bad or the pour just aerated and decarbonated this one enough to make it drinkable. It’s still not great, but I think I’ll be able to handle the other four if I have them the same way. You get your usual toastiness, caramel, earthy/leafy character, and that’s all good. But the “leaves” have been rotting under a shingle for since last fall. A tart, musty, moldiness, whatever you want to call it. Not good on its own. Thankfully, however, in this pour it was much more subdued, as I’ve already said. Semi-tart, earthy, smoky in the finish. Medium in body, somewhat watery for the style, well-carbonated, borderline effervescent at first but sudsy to sloshy prickles.
