Märzen is a lager style beer traditionally served at Oktoberfest. It has a solid caramel malt backbone, but is moderately crisp to taste. Bready nose, slightly floral.

12 ounce can - $2.79 at Total Wine & More in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a nearly clear, coppery amber hue with a medium-sized, near-white head.

Smell: A nice, clean crackling crust of bread malt aroma, a light hint of barley grain and a faint, faint touch of dried herb akin to loose tea leaf.

Taste: Moderate though restrained toastiness with a pleasant near-dry quality. Scantly herbal hops, minimally bitter. Pleasant toasty maltiness throughout, nearingly sweet, but sustains that dryness through the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Actually, quite likable, and missed the traps others tend to step right in (i.e., not overtly caramelly, sweet or cloying).

Appearance: Brilliant, clear copper color. Fluffy white head with excellent retention. Great lacing.

Aroma: Malt forward. Toasty, bready with notes of biscuit. Subtle floral hops note in background.

Taste: Toast, caramel, bread. Restrained bitterness. Medium sweetness, but balanced. Alcohol well hidden.

Mouth feel: Soft, semi-dry, well rounded. Low carbonation. Medium to full bodied. Medium length finish.

Overall: Very surprised and pleased with the Mazen from such a young brewery. Malt forward, but just enough bitterness to give it some balance. Extremely drinkable/sessionable. Packed with malty flavors: toast, bread, and caramel primarily. Hint of biscuit. It's a challenge to meet the standard set by German Marzen; but Tucker Brewing did a nice job. Exactly what you look for in an Oktoberfest beer, well crafted. I'll definitely grab this one again next fall.
