Halyard Brewing Co. "The Breeze"
12 fl. oz. can; ink jet coding is illegible.
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a weird beer because it doesn't seem to be a beer. The label reads "Ingredients: Water, Cane Sugar, Molasses, Fresh Organic Ginger, Lime Juice, Hibiscus Flowers, Spices. Contains Sulfites.". I can only assume then that this is correct and that there's no malt or hops involved and yet the label also reads "HIBISCUS AND LIME GINGER BEER". OK, let's try it anyway. It's poured a hazy deep copper colored body with what seems to be a ruby sheen. It looks ruby colored in the full glass but when I hold it to the light that's not clear. The head was a foamy finger's width of white but it dropped almost immediately. Interestingly enough there is some lacing left behind. The aroma is fruity, floral, tea-like, and sweetish. The flavor is quite interesting. It's lightly tart but also sweet and sugary. The molasses comes across more like brown sugar until the finish where it's clear that it's molasses. It remains fruity, floral, and tea-like. It makes me think of rooibos tea but I haven't had that in so long I can't really remember what it's like. I'm not sure what spices they've used but it tastes like they've used Allspice. There's only a hint of lime to it, which is fine. Overall it tastes like a soda pop but it's not as sweet. A 12 oz. can of Coca Cola contains 39 grams of sugar while this has only 5 grams. I like it but it's not beer. It's got 4.5% alcohol by volume and 132 calories for the whole can. In the mouth it's light bodied and gently crisp. In and of itself I like it quite a bit but I can't really score it that high as it's not really beer.

A: The beer is clear dark yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with just a minuscule collar of white bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of ginger are present in the nose along with hints of hibiscus.
T: The taste has flavors of ginger along with notes of lime and hints of hibiscus.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this beer to be quite flavorful and tasty, especially for a gluten-free beer. It was very easy to drink.
