From a 12oz bottle. Amber color with plenty of off-white head. Smells of citrus and pine with some caramel malt in there. Medium feel, good carbonation. Tastes like it smells, citrus and pine with some caramel malt. Solid IPA.

Pours a hazy amber color. 2/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of citrus hops, floral hops, hint of tea, slight sweet malt, and a hint of alcohol. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is an elevated bitterness. Tastes of citrus hops, floral hops, hint of tea, slight sweet malt, hint of piney hops, and a hint of alcohol. Overall, good appearance and feel, with aroma and body better than average.

Picked this up at Trader Joe's, 6-pack glass bottles for $6.99. I would not call this an IPA. It smells and tastes like an amber ale or Oktoberfest. Bitter, but not at all like how an IPA should taste. Very little fruit aroma, more caramel-like. I might buy it again but not if I want to enjoy an IPA.

EDIT 2/1/18: I'm not sure what happened with my first bottle, but I had a few more since I first wrote. Upgraded the Smell and Taste scores. It does smell and taste like a good IPA after all! Fruity aromas with a good hop hit. Would drink again.

Amber with off-white creamy head. Piney hop aroma. This IPA allows more malt to shine through in the taste. Resiny with some citrus and hoppy bitterness. Lower ABV, but pretty good.

Very impressed with this IPA. Bold piney notes with a fairly balanced flavor. It also pairs great with chocolate. For $7 bucks at Trader Joes this is a must try!

Pours a copper color with a nice foamy head and sticky lace. In the nose there are modest hints of tropical fruit. Fruity and juicy taste with a moderate hops bite. Medium to light bodied.
As with other Trader Joe beers, this one although not spectacular, is actually pretty tasty.

(copied from RB) Lots of flavor (bitter) in this beer. I had this side-by-side with a Mission St. Pale Ale, and I liked the stronger, bitter flavor in the IPA better: big surprise. This is a solid IPA.

Big disappointment. Glass: large wine glass. The "new" Mission IPA is now brewed by Four + Brewing in Salt Lake City. Thin, almost flavorless. Where are the Hops? Abv down to 5.8. Price for 6 pack $6.99. It was pretty decent at $4.99 a 6 pack when Firestone was brewing it.

I'll be honest on this one, my wallet definitely affected my rating. For the price there aren't too many IPA's (although it drinks like a pale) more satisfying. World class beer? Not in the least. Delicious beer and a great value? I thinks so.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Modern Times pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $5.99 for a 6-pack
Purchased: Aug. 26, 2014
Consumed: Aug. 29, 2014
Misc.: Born on June 27, 2014 at 11:23 a.m.

Poured a caramel, honey, orange semi-hazy color with two fingers of off-white head. Below average spots of wet foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention on the top of the glass. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled citrus hops, tropical hops, melon, resin, wet hops, earthy, rye notes, soapiness, lime and caramel. (Smell - 3.50)

Tasted pretty close to the smell. Got citrus hops, grapefruit rind, floral hops, earthy rye notes, soapiness, lime, pine, slight resin and caramel. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, citrusy finish. Pretty good feel. (Feel - 3.75)

A decent IPA and a great beer for the value ($5.99 for a 6-pack). I’d have this again, but I do prefer their pale ale. (Overall - 3.75)

I had one of these yesterday while watching football and was very impressed with the flavor. Drank very smooth and lots of hoppy citrus flavor. Overall a great quality brew especially considering the price. I picked up a couple at my local Trader Joe's and wish I had gotten more. If you like other brands like Sweetwater or even Sierra Nevada, you'll like this one as well. Do yourself a favor and grab at least a sixer. You'll thank me later.

Poured from a bottle into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium to dark copper amber with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, citrus and grassy hops with just a bit of something vegetal. So far, so good. Flavor is light caramel malt, dry grassy hops with a hint of grapefruit citrus; finishes with an odd resinous bitterness without any supporting pine or herbal flavors. Medium bodied. Looks and smells quite nice, but the hop character is kind of tired. Good hop bitterness, but little interesting flavor. I'm not sure about the age or storage of this beer, but purchased recently; it does have some characteristics of a slightly over-the-hill IPA. Wanted to try the Mission Street beers from Trader Joe's as it sounds like they are going to be replaced with a another brewery. OK for the price and drinkable; plenty of hop bitterness, but I won't miss this.

A: Pours a crystal clear bronze-ish amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and some faint golden yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall dense foamy beige head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of earthy, pine, and herbal hops over the top of a light to moderate aroma of sweet caramel malts.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of sweet rich caramel malts with the slightest hint of light fruit sweetness as well. That is followed by moderate flavors of hops - lead by herbal then followed by pine and earthy. Light amounts of bitterness which fades relatively quickly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly creamy.

O: Solid beer at a very reasonable price - easy to drink and enjoyable. Definitely worth grabbing, especially considering the price.

I was over at Trader Joe's today. I got this beer and a couple of others to try. I continue to be impressed by the value and quality of the Trader Joe's beers.

Appearance
Thick off-white head. Decent retention. Very good lacing. Orange amber body. Small to medium sized carbonation bubbles that are quite lively. I was hoping for some cloudiness but there was none. Beside that this beer looks very nice.

Smell
Strong hops aroma that is pine dominant but also has a citrus character. Faint bread-like malts.

Taste
Strong hop flavor. The taste is similar to the aroma, but the hops have a bitterness that is not present in the nose. Quite bitter. Tastes like bitter pine hops with a little bit of grapefruit peel. Faint malt presence at the end.

Mouthfeel
Pretty full bodied. The hops bitterness lingers. There is an oiliness that remains. Robust carbonation but it does not sting.

Overall
A very hops forward beer. High bitterness. The malt body is there in the mouthfeel but is somewhat lacking in the taste. IMO this beer needs more of a malt presence to balance out the hops. Maybe that says more about my views on IPA's than it does about this particular brew. Around here this beer sells for about 70% the price of say Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and comparable craft brews. Good value. Good beer. A little too hops forward for my palate.

Mission St. IPA has a thin, cream-colored head, a mostly clear, somewhat bubbly, orange appearance, and a little bit of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of piney hop resin, and the flavor is of that, plus sweet white bread. Bitterness is moderate. Mouthfeel is medium and slick, and Mission St. IPA finishes semi-dry, easy drinking, and refreshing.

Pours a dark golden hue with a huge head into my glass. I'm hoping this will edge out their pale ale.

Light and crisp with a HUGE dollop of citrus. It reminds me of other beers with a similar profile.

Very tasty with grapefruit and sweet, bready malt.

Finishes clean with that great citrus hop bite.

Much better choice here.

The body is very clean with a thin paleness but the head mounts thickly.

The aroma is bitter and floral but gives off a sour fruit. Grapefruit and lemon, pine resin, pithy rind and caramel malts can all be found.

The flavor is more to the bitter herbal but a sour grapefruit rind exists. Deeply underneath a tea leaf malt flavor runs thick. The hops are pithy bitter but not brash and deeply resined.

The feel is slick, bitter but not too astringent.

This was a very inexpensive craft beer but had a lot of good hop bitterness and sufficient malt support.

I've always been curious about these beers at TJ's, but skeptical since they're never refrigerated. I ventured to pick one up, since it was remarkably fresh (~3 weeks old), bottled 12/31/2013, and at $5.99/6 pack it wasn't going to break the bank - so why not!

Poured at fridge temperature from a stubby 12oz bottle into my pint glass.
A - Looks clean and slightly amber in color when held up against light. About an inch of head that receded after a minute or two, and left some lacing as it went down. Good stuff!

S - Oh yes, very piney and floral. Getting some malty caramel as well. Some lemon and grass notes detected as well. This one leans towards the citrusy side on the aromatics.

T - Follows the smell. A very good balance between the malt and the hops. I detect slight sweetness upfront but the hops kick in rightaway and from then on it drinks like a grapefruit juice. The beer finishes dry, with lasting grassy bitterness on the palate. I detect some mint in the finish as well. Just the way I like my IPAs. I imagine this would pair extremely well with some meat dishes - grilled and slightly seasoned. Very well done!

M - Medium and creamy. Impressive again!

O - This is an excellent brew, and at that price I see myself buying this over and over again. Easily compares to some well known IPAs that retail at a slightly higher price point.

Color and clarity are good, solid head retention.

Aroma is a bit lacking. Classic IPA scents, with a lot less bang.

Taste is pretty good. 6.1% abv but you would think 5% if you didn't read the label. No complaints though, the kind of IPA you can have a few of and not overload your palate. Light, but and actually a bit more malty than hoppy.

Mouthfeel is pretty good, somewhat standard.

Overall this is a very drinkable IPA and a hell of a value. It says right on the label "Mission Street resides at the crossroads of quality and value", and I couldn't have put it better. You lose a bit of the hop punch that more expensive IPAs provide but it may be worth the reduced price.

Mission St (budget IPA)

A: Great looking! Pours like a STONE. Very hazed body, supports a lasting, thick head, that leaves very sticky persistent clouds of lace. 4.25

S: A little tame. More malt by a hair than hop, citrus, pine, ocean cliffs, herbal. Fine. 3.5

T: Very nice - follows the smell, but more powerful and satisfying. Very juicy balance of citrus, sun-baked grasses, and biscuity malts. West coast style, almost a little watered down? I could drink this if I was on a budget. best budget IPA I have tried. 3.75

M: Nice long flavor arc, good feel, nice finish. 4

Overall: A high quality low cost IPA that I would recommend to anyone, a great starter IPA. Authentic, scores well on craft (look, balance, finish, feel!) 3.75

Agree with this reviewer: "reminds me of UNION JACK at half the price. Super fresh I could see this killing in a blind tasting."

Appearance is the best part of this brew. About two plus fingers of cream white head leaves a strong pattern of lace.
Smell is also excellent for this pour. Strong aroma of bread like malts floral grapefruit hops with a kiss of pleasant yeast.
Taste is floral fruity and bitter piney hops. Bready malt support helps soothe the hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel is slightly thin but normal for an IPA.
Overall an easy drinking AIPA. Not as bold as many but very close to style IMO.

This is my first time trying an IPA.
Poured from a bottle into a glass mug.

A- Nice filtered amber color, slightly ruby. Two and a half finger head that fizzles to a light froth. Small bubbles streaming up. Leaves good amount of lacing.

S- Piney and floral hops. Very pleasant to the nose. It reminds me of a pine forest mixed with marijuana.

T- True to the smell. Grassy, floral, piney hops. Has a sweetness to it. Some malts. Very little bitterness. I really enjoy this flavor. Hoppy and bready aftertaste.

M- Good amount of carbonation. Medium light mouthfeel.

O- Overall, this is a very tasty beer. I really enjoyed it. I didn't know that I'd even like this beer.

Pours a clear light copper with a slightly off white head that has excellent retention
Smell is hops, stringent hops, pine nuts, around a tart fruity odder.
Tangy and tart citrus taste that includes grapefruit
Medium body,
True to its IPA style. Hops dominate, with malts finishing a distant second. A solid IPA.

look is a darkish amber orange with great looking head and retention. smell is dank hops, some fruity esters, sweet bread malt. taste is earthy and bitter, with a fruity middle, and semi-sweet malt finish.

pleasantly surprised by this one. less sweet and it would be one of my favorite IPAs (after you take price into consideration, of course).

Wow. Best beer I've tried of all the Trader Joes house brands. Glass? No stinkin glass, right from the bottle after a humid, warm NJ summer day. Hmmmm, smells nice. Good fruity hops and very pleasant. First swig is a suprise. Reminds me of some of the great brews I was throwing back in California recently. Interesting to find out Firestone Walker is brewing this IPA. That's great street cred. Mouth feel is nice and carbonation is just right. Beer is very east to drink and reminds me of a west coast Harpoon IPA. More hops and a tad more malty sweetness. Finish is medium and doesn't promote any bad lingering bitterness. Overall, very pleased. I will certainly make it a regular in my fridge rotation. At $6.49 a six pack, quite a deal.
