500ml bottle served cool into a chalice. Durand purchase. Cyan wax sealed bottle that cost a fortune. Smell from the bottle is so much bourbon.
Appearance - Inky black brew with a small very deep brown tan head that lasts a minute. Thickness of engine oil. When the thickness can be commented on, damn.
Smell - Molasses treacle, vanilla, marshmallow, bourbon. Leather an tobacco are in there too. Robust, deep and well crafted, not in your face but like surround sound of aroma, just so ever present.
Taste - Full flavor with dark chocolate, treacle and marshmallows; vanilla smoothly integrated. Bourbon is there but subdued. Some wood and tobacco comes through. Extremely intense, but at the same time not overbearing. No bite. Certainly boozy, but doesn't feel like 35 proof, more like upper 20's (you know this is a big big beer). Cocoa powder in the aftertaste. Molasses and licorice come through in certain sips as well. Not too sweet, not too bitter.
Mouthfeel - Thick and chewy, low carbonation extremely full body. Lots of heat at the back of the throat, but it's a good smooth heat, like a fine bourbon or scotch. Very much a sipper or a good bottle for sharing as 16oz is a lot for a treat so special.
Overall - A true treat, the layers of bourbon, wood and sweet treats are masterfully integrated, giving a great experience. Would go great on some vanilla ice cream too.
