Los Dos Portillos, a discovery for me, has crafted a unique passion fruit wheat beer that I'm excited to review. Pouring it into a Wiezen glass, I'm immediately drawn to the sight of a frothy, airy, two-fingered white head, which, despite its average retention, leaves behind a beautiful lacing on the glass. The beer is a straw yellow with light golden hues (SRM 3), with slight cloudiness and lively carbonation bubbles. The overall appearance of this style is above average, promising a visually stimulating experience.
As I bring the glass to my nose, I'm greeted by a delightful medley of scents. The citrus, pineapple, and wheat notes are prominent, thanks to the beer's generous amount of passion fruit. The sweetness of the fruit and malt creates an off-balance. Other aromas are a light clove, toasted cereal grains, and a hint of earthiness. The strong presence of passion fruit adds a unique challenge to fully appreciating all the aromas in the beer.
The passion fruit is ripe and juicy, with notes of pineapple and strawberries. The wheat ale has citrus flavors, cloves, toasted wheat, and earthiness. The last flavors I taste are a light, chalky note with floral blossoms and bay leaves. The chalk has a mineral taste; is it the water quality?
The mouthfeel is soft and chewy, and it finishes dry. The body is medium and has medium carbonation.
Sipping and mulling this beer over, I realized it had too much fruit and needed a solid beer-style base. The wheat beer has this odd mineral/chalk taste, making it drier than I prefer. The fruit on the nose is sweet, but none of that sweetness translates to the taste; the fruit is a bit sour, too. Overall, the beer is refreshing on a hot afternoon in Idaho.
