Germans working the trans-American railroad brought lager yeast with them but there are no cold caves in the American west to brew a lager; so they brewed at temperatures typical of an ale; thus, 'steam ale' was born. Deceptive in that it is very dark, it is an easy drinking, full bodied beer.

Pours a very dark burgundy-brown with a finger of khaki foam. Aroma is roasty crackers, wafers, bread, and herbal & mild sticky hops. Flavor profile is crackers, roasty, bready, and wafery malts for a dark, dry experience. Mild herbal hops add a little further depth to the malty base. Mouth feel is a comforting fuzzy texture with a medium thickness. Overall, a semi-dry, dark combo. Pleasant.

32oz crowler. Poured out an opaque, black color with a small, khaki-colored head of bubbly foam. It left sudsy sheets of lace on the glass. It smelled of roasted malt, coffee, toffee and some caramel. Nice roasted malt taste with some bitter coffee and toffee sweetness.
