Pours black with a medium brown head.. Aroma is a smokey coffee. Taste is a smokey lager with subtle chocolate, woodiness and black coffee. Feel is medium high carbonation. Crisp finish. Excellent feel. Overall, I think a found a grilling companion.

DATE: November 14, 2020... OCCASION: the annual Tolkien watching tradition begins a bit before the holidays...An Unexpected Journey deserves something dark yet light-hearted--this schwarzbier, my first attempt at Chilton Mill, will do nicely...GLASSWARE: Hennepin pokal... this pours a dark purplish black body replete with bubbles that barnacle the glass... its dark tan head is creamy and equally bubbly, a finger's worth of resilience from an hours-old crowler... fudge, candied sugars, tootsie roll, thick roasted breads, wet leaf, and weakened hops that evoke a pleasant hillside... a textured, slightly slick, easy-drinking lager that begins without fanfare at the teeth and finishes by leaving the throat with a dryness that takes a cola and removes its effervescence without flattening it... its grainy mouthfeel is holds each sip a moment longer than the usual lager might... the flavor is tootsie roll, roasted oats, sweet malts, and rich, milky cocoa... this is a nice introduction to the brewery, with an offering close to its style and enjoyable in its own right...

On-tap @ Chilton Mill Brewing in Long Valley, NJ.

Very dark brown and opaque. Creamy off-white head sits on top. Roasted malt aroma with light earthy hops giving it a bit of an edge. Flavor is heavy on the roasted malt with no shortage of coffee and dark chocolate to back it up. Body and feel is nice on this one, creamy and smooth. Medium bodied, balanced, clean and drinkable.
