michigan brewing company's bourbon barrel aged imperial ipa has a good balance of malt, hops, wood, and bourbon. the flavors meld into an oaky, malty, hoppy. bourbon mess! the bourbon/oak is not over powering, it has a good balance.
i was served a brandy glass of coppery colored beer with a thin head the dropped in to a few star bubbles after a half hour.
the aroma was very malty and hoppy with a solid backbone of oak and bourbon.
the flavor is very pleasant, malty with a good bitterness and a solid hopsack smacking up upside your face, biscuits, resinous hops, bourbon, wood, ending with alcohol heat. as the beer wormed up th softer some of the sharper flavors became and the less intense the fusels became.
very limited release was told by brewer 1.5 bbl for spring 2007
(note to brewer) +good plan josh-do it again next year.
