Last year I was traveling through Raton, NM, and I discovered they had a brewery. I knew I had to go. Pulled up, got out, and found out the place was closed. A lady was chatting up with the person from the business next door and asked if I wanted a beer. I explained I was out of town and wanted to buy some bottles. The lady was the owner and let me buy beer; it was an epic experience. The gentleman inside was the brewer, and we chatted it up for a minute. I was told this beer should last a couple of years; it is a 2019 edition. I used a chalice to serve the beer around 44 degrees. The pour created a two-fingered off-white foamy and creamy head. The retention of the head is good, but it left some lacing on the glass. The color is amber with golden hues, charting around SRM 10. The beer is clear, except for the carbonation bubble dancing within. An elegant showing for the appearance of the beer.
I first detect biscuit, banana, cloves, spicy white pepper, and floral esters. Nosing further, I recognize oranges, a touch of horse blanket, a bit of funk, earthiness, and lightly toasted malts. The beer smells fantastic.
The flavors in the beer are banana, cloves, white pepper, leather, lightly toasted malts, bready, oranges, earthiness, floral esters, a hint of herbal, a touch of horse blanket, and morning dew.
The mouthfeel of the beer is warming, spicy, and dry.
The body of the beer is medium-plus, medium-plus carbonation, and medium finish.
This beer is stellar. The flavors are bright but not overpowering. The malt backbone is sturdy, giving the hops something to create harmony with. I would put this beer against any Belgium Pale Ale. I am stunned at how well-made this beer is, considering it is from Raton. In my travels, I will go back to enjoy more of their offerings.
