Salty Bear Brewing Company

 

This micro brewery and tap room is one of several in a small light industrial area of Costa Mesa. It is quite comfortable with a nice outdoor seating area and a nice mix of different seating options inside, with some very comfortable, relaxed areas great for lingering and relaxing over a few beers. Service is overall good, but mixed. One evening, they shut down quite early and seemed rather curt about no longer serving even though plenty were still drinking and it was nowhere near the 9pm closing time. The next evening, service was good and friendly (different staff). Beer range of styles is pretty good. Beer quality is indifferent- simple and one dimensional, fairly lacking in character. That was true of both the red ale and Pilsner I had, neither of which had much character. They stout was better. I also found the beer to be served a tad too cold. It’s good and I’d go back to give it another try if in the area but mostly because it is very comfortable.

We were early for our flight at John Wayne airport nearby so we figured that visiting three breweries was better than sitting at the airport. This is a large modern taproom in the Crescent Ave beer triangle with plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. Good selection of very tasty brews in various styles.
