this is a very light and simple take on a stout, some light coming into the glass, less dark and hefty looking than most, almost more of a deep brown ale, but the flavors are there, more roasty and deep than it looks, although the beer does feel a little watery and thin to me, in the absence of much body or carbonation, not a lot of life to this, but the flavors arent bad. all of the beer in here at their spokane location tasted and felt a little amateur to me. this has some of that same weird off fermentation character, but its less obvious than in their lighter beers. i just wish for more body and bubbles than anything else. some nice bitterness from the darker grains contrast well with the sweeter caramel malt center this has. i get subtle toffee, tobacco, and brown sugar here, a little chocolate malt richness as well, some minerals underlying the whole thing, and just a touch of copper metallic character at the end, but this is close to being pretty good. its just a little light and a little basic and needs some refinement in fermentation. im not sure how good these guys will do with their beer in such a crowded and evolved beer market, but their cider seems like the focus anyhow...
