Turnagain Brewing

this place is absolutely awesome, churning out some of the most ambitious beers anywhere in the area, but with none of the hype that anchorage for example garners, so low key, i was blown away. the space is quite modest, almost a coffee shop feel when you walk in with just a handful of tables, storefront windows, and a small bar in the back with the beer menu and the taps, flanked by a cooler with all their packaged offerings, of which there were many when we were in. they have an upstairs which i assume is quite a bit bigger, but we didnt wander up, and there is a small outside seating area, no frills here, its all about the beer. husband and wife team, real nice folks to chat with. they have their production space in behind the bar and taproom, and have all their sour and funky stuff separated from all their clean beer, a cool setup, very intelligent. the beers here are mostly fantastic! i was stoked on the flanders red they do with alder wood, as well as on their baltic porter. i was less impressed with a too clean saison and a slightly sloppy kveik yeast hazy ipa, but the ambition here is amazing, and i have liked fruited and wild beers from them in the past too, they really have a cool house culture and quite a bit of technical skill in the brewhouse. the space was relaxing, kind of minimal, but very friendly, and we quickly struck up with some other patrons. hard not to be impressed with the beer selection too, cant believe they are turning out so many brews here. this place is really special, they are totally invested in their craft, in the process, and the beer speaks for itself. i will probably never go to anchorage again in my life without popping in here for a couple and to say hello, do not sleep on turnagain!
