a mighty unique kolsch here, light and drinkable as can be, but dry hopped with both cascade and sorachi ace, which are interesting hops for the style to be sure, but also are a real uncommon combination together in any beer, so this one kind of caught me by surprise. the base beer is simple and clean enough, a little fruity note from the yeast on the back end, but german enough in grain character and summery and just short of crisp like it should be for a kolsch, better than average execution there but nothing amazing, its the hops that set this off. the cascade hops impart some unique bitterness that sort of mimics what a robust noble hopping might do here, but has some bitter grapefruit too, while the sorachi has its very recognizable lemon curd and dill and tea complexion, which is awesome with the yeast and really defines this for me, not sure ive seen this hop with a kolsch yeast before, its a fine combination indeed! there is a little more sweetness to this than it needs, and even though the body is super light, it makes it less refreshing than i want it to be. its also lacking in carbonation, which really kills the mood. that said though, i liked the beer overall, and its just a little refining away from being great, im sure they will have it dialed in by next summer when the season hits. the hop combination is awesome, never thought sorachi and cascade could work together this well. very cool!
