a maltier and stronger ipa, near amber in color, sweet and nutty and even sort of autumnal there, but then fresh on the hops side, bold and bitter with some northwestern piney dankness, and this ends up being quite the hearty drink, well made but definitely a relic, even though its relatively new on their menu. good clarity and a frothy white head on this, deep copper to even chestnut toned, high carbonation. it smells wonderful, and i like all the malt here. its still hop driven, but i get fresh bread and almond underneath that, almost english in that way, sturdy as can be. the hops hit on pine and citrus pith layers, and its real cohesive. the flavor matches the nose, great freshness here and its not that sweet for being so malty. the hops show bitter orange and grapefruit, fresh spruce, and a weedy oily headiness, more bitter than is fashionable these days. really good depth of flavor from the grain, and maybe i welcome this type of ipa in a world where everything is hazy juice, its more striking now that its a throwback. these guys have come a long way in the short time they have been open in terms of quality, good stuff!
