tasty new stout art warfield, somewhat unexpected to me, as the bitterness is high despite it having some lactose, and it presents as not just roasty but also kind of hoppy, not black ipa range, but with more hops than is common in this sort of thing, kind of piney and festive for the winter season if in fact it is intentional, it works, and its a nice change of pace from the pastry type. matte black without an insane amount of viscosity and a pretty short off white head from the tap. the nose on this is roasty and bitter, with a cooler coffee profile and a rather well hidden alcohol content, nothing really sweet about it, some dark chocolate character, sort of muted to me really at first. the flavor is quite a bit more robust than the aroma, i get the pine now from the hops, a juniper note, and definite early onset bitterness along with the roast, dark cocoa, espresso, and leather notes, really pleasant and well layered and again without the alcohol having much of a presence in it. some brown sugar type sweetness in the middle at temperature but the lactose doesnt make a big impact, feel more than flavor i suppose, with a longer and rounder texture. the carbonation isnt real high but it doesnt need to be, this is only middle of the road in terms of overall weight. its still wintery, the hops give it freshness, it warms to some chocolate richness, and overall is a pretty nice brew. good to get to drink some new ones from these guys when we went up to sun valley to get a christmas tree out in the wild!
