i believe the name of this one is dubbel kubal, not dubbed as it says here, but as in the style. either way, its an awesome beer, done in collaboration with the coffee roaster they share walls with, at least done with their coffee, its an awesome take on a dubbel and on a coffee beer, belgian beer sees coffee all too infrequently, but there are some natural synergies to be exploited, and this beer brings them to light well. the abbey type malt the dubbel seems based around loved the dry cocoa and roasted notes of the coffee, and the fruity yeast picks up some cool fig and raisin notes as well, not sweet and not bitter, but a little bit of everything all at once, unique and layered, but also super well balanced. i love the way the coffee makes it kind of warm, and how just a little acidity cuts the obvious malt sugars down to approachable levels. i also like this being low alcohol for the style. its rich and nutty but its not getting me whacked. great autumnal character from grain and coffee, and the esters of the yeast fit perfectly, well enough controlled in fermentation. this was really professional to me, somehow a level up from almost everything else we had in here, even though i liked just about all their beer. probably the highlight of our visit here for me. great use of the coffee in a style that really embraces and highlights it. awesome.
