There is no appearance of carbonation below that big khaki froth, which gradually, settles leaving a thick coating of lace. Half way through the beer and the head is still impressive. The Marzen is opalescent, shy of clear, with a rich dark amber/bright copper color.
The aroma is mild, with toasted malt and nuts. Light apple comes out with warmth, otherwise it is rather simple.
Dryer than most, with light sweetness. Bitter flavors quickly take hold, though far from strong, more akin to what one expects from dark roasted malt. Nuts fill the middle and build into the long moderate finish. Warmth amplifies the nut flavors.
Surprisingly light body, with light alcohol. The texture is soft and lush, similar to fur. Carbonation is very light.
This is an easy drinking beer. One could fill an afternoon under chestnut trees, on in my case out on the covered deck. Perfect for this cool partly cloudy day. Hot pretzels or ham hock’s would round out the experience. And BTW, it’s ham hocks for lunch tomorrow!
