Poured from a can into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a hazed deep amber color mixed with a small head of white foam. The head fades rather fast leaving a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Upon swirling the brew in the vessel its thickness can be appreciated, showing fingers of beer clinging to the sides of the vessel and very slowly receding back to the base of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is very malty and bready smelling with a grainy, brown bread smell being the base. At the same time there are sweet aromas of molasses and toffee as well as caramel and raw malted barley and a bit of nuttiness. Mixed with all these comes some big boozy smells of a whisky like nature as well as notes of char, oak, and a light herb.
Taste – The taste begins with sweet bready flavor with the sweet being huge of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. At the same time there are other sweet flavors of harvest fruits and some cherry and plum. Right away there is a rather strong booziness of a whisky flavor, which grows more and more intense as the taste moves on. At the same time other nutty flavors and some yeast develop as well mixing with the sweet and boozy rather nicely. A surge of sweetness comes at the very end, and with a little bit of a rum joining the whisky, one is left with a rather boozy and sweet taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is super thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is low. For an English style barley-wine the feel is spot on, making this one a very slow sipper indeed.
Overall – A rather intense brew to say the least. In the tradition of the style, this one is huge in sweet and booziness with a rather thick and robust look and feel. Overall a nice slow sipper.
