smoothie style sour, not a huge fan of the style, but this one is better than most, seems less dependent on vanilla and marshmallow fluff and random sugars and more focused on the fruit, simple in some ways, but i like it as much for what it isnt as i do for what it is. a cool combination of fruit in this, blueberry and mango, i thought maybe blackberry too, deep pink color to this, milky and viscous but with some head and some carbonation, looks no more messy than any others in this style space, still wrapping my head around people like this look and texture in a beer. the sourness smells clean, simple lactic souring and quite restrained, some nice tang from the blueberries in complement, and the sweeter tropical mango more robust in the later stages, sweet but not over the top, a hint of creaminess and lactose but not diabetic, i dont smell much from the malt or the hops. the flavor is all fruit, tons of puree i assume in this, authentic enough, fermented down enough for this to be cohesive, and the mango and blueberry are awesome together, super compatible and they hit at different moments which works to extend this and add complexity. a floral note, melted orange popsicle, and starchy grain in support. its just beery enough, but definitely on the edge. the acidity cuts the sweetness nicely on the swallow, and even though this is thick and fruity, its not as dense and permanent on the palate as many others, and i think this is about as refined as the style can be. a better than most take on the smoothie sour. i was impressed with the two black spruce beers i had while in alaska!
