Alongside the miners, pit ponies worked underground, hauling heavy coal carts through the narrow shafts, and spending much of their lives in darkness. These diligent animals were more than just muscle; their sharp senses often detected dangers before humans could. If a pony became restless or refused to move, it was seen as a vital warning of an impending explosion or collapse, making them trusted, instinctive guardians in the dangerous mines.
