I had this a few times, now let's review it. From Ukraine. Cool bottle.
Proper head. Frothy and not too thin. Quite harsh aroma, kind of like brandy or whisky, and a little biscuity, with some honey.
Very malty flavour. Hops are prominent, similar to a few Czech beers I have tried...not in a flowery way but more of a musky deep kind of way. It's not quite as good as I remember it being, but to be honest I was on an all day session following an all night one, and if someone had given me a glass of methylated spirit I probably would have liked it. Mouth feel is well rounded, with significant hops in the aftertaste. Though it's also a little effervescent and lacks the fullness of a well made Czech or German pilsner. Still, far better mouth feel than Lvivske and Obolon pilsner/light beers.
I love bitter beers, the bitter the better usually, and it's rare that I want a bit more sweetness. Yes this maybe would be better sweeter slightly. There is a slight sourness, I assume from the yeast, that needs a bit of sweetness to balance it out. Yes overall, this is a really impressive Ukrainian beer. I'd probably define it as a pilsner if I had to define it. But it's pretty unique and unlike any other beer that I can think of, including in Ukraine.
Tastes I detect include honey, prunes, figs, dates, tangerine. The hops linger in your mouth and in the aftertaste. Overall I think this is a really unique and interesting beer. A little too effervescent and the aroma is not great. Yet it makes up for this with the unique and complex taste. And as always, respect to the delivery driver who risked his life to bring this to me. Slava Ukrainii.
