Pours a very dark brown, almost black, coloration with a huge, thick, creamy, very long-lasting head. Smells of roasted malt, chocolate, citrus hops and lighter notes of coffee and pine. Taste is a good balance of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and lighter notes of citrus hops, tobacco and pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted malt, tobacco and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
While this is slightly more dominated by the roasted malts and coffee/chocolate notes than the hops, it does have good bitterness and quite noticeable citrus/pine accents to it. A lighter, less intense BIPA is the obvious comparison here, or perhaps a more hoppy Schwarzbier. Nice enough, but why would I wanna drink this over a proper BIPA?
