Brewed with oats, Simcoe, and Citra hops. Dry with hints of dark chocolate, a fine roasty flavor and a wonderful hint of bitter citrus.

I had this on draught at the brewery. It pours jet black with mahogany hues when held to the light, and one finger of foamy, khaki-colored head and lacing. It's really an attractive pour. It smells of roasted malt, brewed coffee, and resinous pine. The taste is roasted malt, burnt coffee, and pine needles. It features a bitter, biting hop finish. It's medium-bodied and the 6.7% ABV gives it substance without being overwhelming. Overall, this is really good! It's just a half-level behind Carton's Epitome, which for me is the standard bearer for a black IPA. This is one magnificent achievement for a new brewer. Well done!

A: Chocolate lab covered in mud. A thin ecru head caps the swampy looking brew. Not really any lacing.
S: Pine, grapefruit, raw cocoa powder, candied apricots.
M: There is a bit of dry roast on the feel. Maybe a hint of resin. Light-med body.
T: Pine, raspberries, orange zest. Some caramel sweetness, but mostly bittersweet chocolate malt.

On tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a fairly dark black, with a small white head, and lots of lacing.
Smells like charred malt and dry smoke- it almost smells scorched. There's some burnt piney, super resinous on the nose, with a nice juicy fruitiness to round it out.
This definitely comes off as very burnt, and very dry- the roast character is pretty aggressive. There's a light smokiness, almost like burnt wood. The Mosaic hops do give this a nice, but subtle sweetness on the finish. It helps to balance out the aggressive bitterness.
This is medium bodied and creamy, with a long lingering bitter finish that sticks to the palate.
This is another great beer from these guys- they can make a good beer even in a wacky style like the Black IPA.
