Canned 1/24/20. Let warm to 45F.
Pours dark mahogany brown , with a moderate tan head, that leaves a 3/4" of spotty lacing, and a 1/4" ring of foam.
Smells like an IPA : some pine, herbal, slight floral , and fruity almost-citrus hoppy aromas. Slight roasty cocoa aroma, as I pull away from the glass. That becomes more noticeable as the head subsides.
Taste is initially light grapefruit , then pine/dank/grass . That fades by half, and a roasty, slightly sweet dark chocolate flavor shows up underneath all that, before the grapefruit returns to finish it off. Moderate bitterness throughout, becoming stronger at finish, and , along with the grapefruit zest flavor, lingering awhile after .
Feel is relatively light for the abv, but not watery , smooth in the first instant, followed by very, very fine carbonation, that has a light, but noticeable tingle and burn.
Overall enjoyable, and well-done. "Where have all the black IPAs gone?" Right here. It comes across as an IPA, with an occasional light roasty chocolate presence. (If you're thinking of Stone's Mocha IPA, think softer, more dialed-back , and more subtle.) I wouldn't want this on a regular basis, but I could see getting a single every once in awhile.

Pours a dark inky black color. Completely opaque. Two finger velvety mocha colored head dissipates slowly but not completely. A thin quarter inch of foam rests on top of the beer and lingers there. Some sporadic lacing is left behind on the glass.
Aroma is quite hoppy - its dry hopped with galaxy hops and you can really see them cutting through and dominating the aroma. Light fruity notes cascade across the nose with notes of fresh green hops. A light cocoa-y note is there, but its subtle.
Taste follows the nose with a strong hoppy character with notes of pine, grapefruit, and some light passionfruit notes. Lightly roasted malts come through with notes of cocoa, wheat and some earthy pine notes.
Moderately full mouthfeel - likely a by product of the wheat and oats. Moderate yet prickly carbonation. Semi-drying finish.
Overall its a really interesting beer - they call it a DDH stout, but to my palate it just reads like a fuller bodied black IPA. A really interesting beer, and very enjoyable to drink.

The hoppy notes make this a very interesting beer. I was hoping for more aroma in the hops. for perspective, my can was 7 weeks old so I would have expected it to be still robust. Flavors were of hearty grains, and maybe a bit of licorice. Not particularly thick, this drinks rather easily. Overall its a decent beer, but maybe not a style I enjoy, or my expectations were too high.

A: Deep umber. The head is amazing...mocha colored mushroom that overflows with the fluffy lightness of steamed milk that is an homage to the wheat.
S: Chocolate covered citrus. Very mild coffee aroma, but a lot of the complimentary aromas one might get like cherry, blueberries, floral and earthy pine. Dried apricot, passionfruit.
M: Very well attenuated. Low sweetness, med-body, and actually a pretty light feel with a roast astringency. Dry oatmeal stout impression.
T: A cereal bar recently opened in my town where you can create any combination of your childhood dreams; this resembles a concoction I had of fruit loops, almond milk, chocolate pebbles, and lucky charms. This starts off aggressively like an IPA, but has a blonde roast finish. Sweetness is very mild overall like one pump of mocha and one caramel in a venti. Overall, my impression is of a black IPA.

Canned on 1/24/2020. Poured into a snifter. It pours an inky, jet black with over a finger of foamy, ecru-colored head and thick, soapy lacing. A subtle nose; mostly roasted malt and wheat cracker. When first sipped, there aren't any strong flavors except for wheat cracker. However, as I swish in my mouth I'm tasting brewed coffee and a hint of cocoa. There are also some mild notes of earthy char and a hint of pepper at the finish. It has a smooth, fairly lite feel with moderate carbonation, and I wouldn't guess it's 7.2% ABV; it feels much lower than that. Overall, this is a very difficult beer to describe. It's like an oatmeal stout without the taste of oats. The taste reminds me of a Triscuit cracker but without the salt. It drinks very easily and is appropriate for casual drinking or paired with anything grilled.

Canned and acquired 1/24/20. Poured into a tulip/snifter style glass.
L: 3.75. Murky brown. Chocolate milk is an apt comparison.
S: 4. Smells like an IPA. Those hops shine.
T: 4.5. As described, a combo of fruity and coco pebbles. A frankenstein's monster.
F: 3.75 Extra t h i c c.
O: 4 Pretty unique and enjoyable, I've had wheat stouts before, but this one was a new adventure.
