Rye has historically been used in winter gardens to protect and provide nutrients for the soil for when spring arrives. Rye can also be used to add some spice character to beer. With these things in mind, we decided to make a porter with rye to provide you with nutrients and protection from the winter while we wait for spring to arrive. Oh, and we added some chocolate malt because let's face it, chocolate just makes everything better.

Had on tap. Shimmering black porter pour with a beige finger of foam, mild lacing. Dark chocolate and rye are in the spotlight of the smell, with roasty malt backing. Taste has all three right away in the taste, but then a dull malt middle, warming yeast rounds out. Feel is roasty and medium bodied, frothy and smooth, warm.

Released December 2022; drank 3/12/23 @ the Yarchives.
Opaque brown/orange appearance.
A violent pour yielded a big tan head; a thick curtain of tree-rung lace remained.
Cherry, milk chocolate & dry rye spice notes in the nose.
Creamy medium mouthfeel.
Cream, chocolate & mild fresh earth flavors up front; a hint of rye spiciness on the finish.
A nice, sweet porter that smelled a bit better than it tasted.

16 oz can, labeled as a "Chocolate Rye Porter," poured into a pint glass. Opaque very dark brown color with a dense tan head that eventually faded to a thin film. Strong dark chocolate and nutty roasted malt aroma with some faint warming spice in the background. Flavor follows, dark roasted malt and bittersweet chocolate predominate but some mildly astringent bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. Mellows out a bit as it warms. Medium, somewhat chewy body.
