The Iron Colossus from Broadleaf Brewery. 16 fl oz can. Received from @Whyteboar in Barleywine and Stout BIF #2. Received 22/02/25, reviewed 04/03/25 (Review 3461). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Stored at 39 degrees F at home. Served at 53.8 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 58.4 degrees F.
Appearance – 4
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, red amber but light barely penetrates.
Head: Large (4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), wheat. High density. Average retention, leaving a 0.3 – 0.4 cm undulating crown, and a pebbly, complete cap.
Lacing – Poor. .
Aroma – 4.25 – Weak chocolate, roasted malt, and a hint of “dark fruit.” No hops, no yeast, no ethanol (8.2 % ABV, as marked on label). No disulfide or diacetyl.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with chocolate, very slightly bitter, and some smoky coffee flavor. No yeast, no hops, no ethanol. No disulfides, no diacetyl. Weak gastric warming. It ends a bit dry.
Palate – 4.25 – Medium; approaching creamy; soft but aggressive carbonation.
Style: Follows the loose style guidelines as condensed by BA.

Final impression and summation: 4 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated personal container) This is a style I love, particularly after Perkuno’s Hammer and Baltic Thunder, both long gone. This one has an acidic metallic bite that would be inappropriate in any other style but is the perfect ending to this brew!

From trade with @whyteboar

Poured at fridge temp into a nonic glass

Pours darker than cola with a nice even tan head. No light gets through holding it up, though it does have a nice caramel colored edge where it thins out. 4

Roasty and mild coffee aroma. A touch of booze and sweetness on the back end. 4

Slightly smoky, more toasted coffee and some malty notes as well. 4

Unexpected smoothness for the 8% as well as nice and lingering. 3.75

Overall a good Baltic whose maltier notes start to shine as the beer warms up.

Poured coffee black with brown highlights and the 1 finger beige head almost stayed around long enough to get in the photo.
The aroma is lost on my Covid damaged nose.
The taste, for the style this is pretty darn good. Lots of roasted malts and toast and some toffee in there, some good coffee flavors and a bit of chocolate as well. Just full of flavor.
The feel is very good, the lack of carbonation makes it good and not great.
OA, I like Baltic Porters, and I think I may need to go get some more of these.
