Collab w/ Hop Butcher. For this collab, we used Nectaron and Motueka. Moreover, the addition of the two hops in their Cryo form helps here to push the saturation to the maximum and enhance the flavors produced by them. At the rendezvous, we have a tropical vibe with notes of pineapple, citrus fruits and stone fruits which makes it a beer of… Predilection.

Pours a thick, milky gold color with short-lived head. The nose is mainly pungent stone fruit, some green hop matter bit, lime pith and a background of BO. Flavor-wise the balance of the character in the nose is in reverse. Kind of stanky medium bitterness with some apricot behind. The beer feels a little bit thin and fizzy with some tongue-coating astringency.
What's weird with this one is that every aspect of it could be easily bumped up a quarter point or more by being very slightly better-executed. There is a lot of "noise" in my opinion. The funky smell could easily be complimentary but is a bit out of place, the flavor could meld better into the rest of the beer. The mouthfeel needs to be smoothed out considerably to be to style. I am glad I still have another can to sit on and see what me doing Messorem's job for them does for this particular case.

Update:
Had last can a couple weeks after my review and it had gotten much better. Nice beer overall at that point. Still a bit scattered, but not a drain pour either. Do your damn job, Messorem people. Otherwise you are just constantly validating my long-standing préjudices against you. I don't want to be right in this case! I want you to actually be great brewers that take your beer seriously.

From a 16oz can, dated 08/03/23. Collaboration between NZ Hops, Hop Butcher and Messorem. Served in an IPA glass.
Pours an opaque, milky-pale grapefruit juice-colour with two fingers of super-soft, lathery suds. Retention is excellent, leaving a thick, creamy cap and a tattered blanket of heavy lacing.
Nose is sweet, cake-like, fruity. Aromas of peach and pineapple, citrus, vanilla cupcake. Dreamy.
Taste is woody, less sweet, more leafy and ‘underripe’ than anticipated. Tasting underripe peach, grapefruit peel, woody pineapple. Ends with balsam and a lime-like citrusy vapor in the sinuses.
Feel is dense and juicy, medium-plus bodied with ample fine, zesty carbonation. Sticky finish.
Overall, a mixed bag for me, but mostly to the good. There’s a weird disconnect between the aroma and the taste, where I’m smelling sweet, overripe and sticky tropical fruit but tasting bitter, woody, underripe peels and cores, and that carries through right to the end of the glass. More of a curiosity than a problem, I guess. Just me overthinking my beer again.
