On tap @ the brewpub on 10/3/09. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a clear copper, with a thin head of eggshell white head. Retains with foamy bunching around the edges, leaving swathes of fizzy lacing. The aroma is spice and citrus wrapped in an earthy floral feel, with pale malts giving up some grainy sweetness. Citrus and malts really give this a nice fresh tang in the nostrils.
Pale malts are sweeter in the taste, with bread blending into citric hops, leaving a pleasant tang in the mouth. The Fuggles gives this an earthy yet still spicy and biting bitterness. Good overall balance here. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a crisp sharpness from the hops, yet this still stays very mellow and easy in mouth.
Nice. This was a bit more hoppy than a traditional English Pale but I didn't mind. Quite tasty and well balanced, with a great easy drinking nature. I enjoyed this.

On tap at Dock Street on 10/3/09. Described as a brew in their "single hop series."
A - Hazy amber/orange body with sparse carbonation and one-finger rocky, off-white head that retained well but didn't lace up as I had expected.
S - Initial aroma suggests deep earthy perfumes, much like a head shop in the heart of San Fran's Haight district. Spicy notes, although subtle, also emerge. Malt character is caramel-based with a hint of baked bread.
T - Earthy and perfumy notes envelope the inside of the mouth, while a sturdy foundation of caramel and grainy, bready malt balances the equasion. A hint of burnt caramel and sugar appears in the middle, followed by an earthy hop bite that lasts into the finish, but is accompanied by a hefty bready malt presence. Quite hoppy for a straight-up Pale Ale, especially an English style brewed with Fuggles hops.
M - Medium bodied with a sticky, syrupy texture and moderate carbonation. Finishes with lingering bitterness on the palate.
D - One of my favorite hop varieties. More breweries should make Fuggles-based ales. Good stuff. This was hopper than I anticipated. I even like saying Fuggles. It sounds like the name of a Muppet!
