Fine dark brown color in the tall tulip. Pleasing foam and plenty of carbonation on the tongue. Long, lovely nose of currants, coffee, and dark malt.
Quite bitter after some sipping. The rewards are a yeasty, rich Belgian flavor, and a malty dark roast. Complex and interesting without being murky. The big malt is layered in shades of darkness, but has a light butterscotch flavor as well as the burnt raisins. Hints of cherries and stewed prunes. Lots of hoppy bitterness, though I don't taste the usual resins. More of a candied grapefruit rind flavor for the long finish.
From the big Belgian corked bottle bought at the brewpub in West Philadelphia. One of seven or eight small batch bottles they had for carryout.

The big malt is layered in shades of darkness, but has a light butterscotch flavor as well as the burnt raisins. Hints of cherries and stewed prunes. The body pours a dark brown with a huge, fluffy khaki cap. The cap rose quickly and stuck around for a while. Sticky lacing reveals sip marks.
The aroma is pretty broad, but a little muted. Roasted malt, dry rye, orange rind, pine needles, and some cocoa powder. Love the complexity but I want this to be a little more expressive.
The Belgian yeast strain stands tall in the flavor profile and feel, lending some fruity notes and a lightness to the overall feel. Notes of cocoa powder, lightly roasted malt, and orange and pine from the generous hops. Flavorful and broad, this delivers what I wanted in the nose.
The Belgian yeast cuts through some of the heft, creating a nice smoothness to the medium body. The finish is dry, with orange rind and pine needles and a mild bitterness.
A very nice Black IPA with a good hop profile and the added bonus of a smooth, delicate Belgian yeast strain. This is an easy drinker, 8% is not even noticeable, and is definitely worth trying.
