Drank on tap at Saltbox Kitchen, Concord, MA
Served in a becker

The beer poured a hazy, dark amber color and was topped by a billowing, off-white crown that slowly fell to a frothy, lasting collar. A patchy latticework of lacing stuck all down the glass.

The nose was hoppy and fairly sweet. Citrus notes dominated. Candied orange peel came to mind. Quite malty too. Big crystal malt presence. Later, a fruity and phenolic yeasty quality appeared that reminded me of something you might find in a Belgian beer. Somewhat odd.

The flavor profile was similar to the nose. Strong citrusy hop notes were tempted by a hefty dose of malty sweetness. Crystal malts again came to mind. Like in the nose, there was a fruity, phenolic, Belgian-like yeastiness that seemed rather odd for the style. Touch of mango in the center. As the beer moved along the palate, the bitterness increased. Orange peel appeared on the back end. A big, pithy, bitter, rind-like note took over in the finish. Fairly sharp but rather short lived. Touch of earthy hop bitterness too.

Nice creamy mouthfeel. Smooth and supple on the palate. The liquid contained a medium bubbled, slightly aggressive effervescence that settled with time and turned frothy and smooth.

Saltbox Kitchen serves some terrific, locally-sourced food and is a welcomed addition to the thriving dining scene in West Concord. That said, their beers really need some work. This double ipa was very malt forward for the style and contained a strange, phenolic yeastiness that came across as out of place just plain “messy.” I really want these folks to succeed, but I think that part of that success will come with hiring someone who can drastically improve their beers.
