This pint can emptied nicely into a clear glass liter mug. Thankfully, there was no rising foam to spoil things. Instead, there's a modest and enduring white head on top of a bright, but lightly colored amber liquid. It's rather translucent, but this is a West Coast IPA, not particularly a hazy variety. There's very little to smell, also not particularly a WCIPA characteristic. With a nose inside the vessel as far as it can go, a hint of piney hops may be caught. This tastes very good, but not specific to a West Coast IPA style. There's no sharp hoppiness, just enough to provide enough bitterness to counterbalance the solid malt base. But, the concept of a WCIPA is to upset that balance toward a piney or citrusy bitterness and care not about the body. Still, it's hard to hate on this one because it's not overly bitter. It doesn't drink like a hazy, as there's no starchiness to the supple body and no fruity, or muted character to the hops. Flat out, without a reference to a subset, this is a delicious AIPA. The body is smooth and carries the degree of hoppiness nicely. No concerns here, as this may not be starkly bitter like many in the West Coast category, but it's hoppy enough in, an earthy way that you know it's an IPA. There's enough hopping here that those that don't care for IPAs because they're too hoppy won't like this, either. The finish isn't overly complicated, but it's both wet and dry, whilst being decently hoppy, There's no lacing, nor taste of alcohol. This is currently a very small brewery in Philadelphia. Everything they've released so far is of high quality. Should an opportunity present itself, try something.
