Pours a slightly cloudy, deep, dark amber coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of sweet'ish biscuity, slightly caramelly malt, hoppy notes of red berries and just a hint of honey. Taste is a good balance of sweet'ish biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and fruity, bitter hops, with strong notes of red berries: redcurrant, blackberry and lighter citrus notes of lime peel, as well as some pine coming through. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some red berry notes and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
The Callista hops really come through nicely here, offering some vibrant red berry notes that complement the sweet'ish malts and bittter, piney hops nicely. While the honey only comes through very slightly in the nose, the spruce shoots add a subtle pineyness to this that feels more organic than the usual piney hop impressions. Overall a somewhat unusual but nicely balanced beer.
