Rated to style (and unwilling to assume the average barleywine or imperial stout is a 4), I think this is very good but not quite great. It packs a pretty serious punch, too…though, considering the abv, it isn’t too hot.

At the tap room, into a snifter. Pours a murky swampy toffee brown, minimal head and no lacing. Nose is very big, but a little muddled…here’s some of what I get: molasses, brown sugar, dates, bourbon, marshmallow, musty wood. Taste follows the nose, but again, it is very big and, for me, a little muddled….pretty sweet, and not all that hoppy, as far as I can tell. But it is very juicy. Whisky comes through very well on the last notes that linger in a meandering way. Body is heavy and thick, carbonation is low…doesnt come to much of a point.

From a 500mL bottle:

Appearance: Dark brown, a little ring of head.

Smell: Big barrel wood, vanilla, some caramel, then a bit of red wine fruitiness.

Taste: Caramel sweetness to start, then some barrel vanilla and wood. Numbing to the tongue. A little booziness shows through, and a splash of red wine fruitiness. As it warms up the caramel and vanilla take over. Bourbon-y finish, quite long.

Overall: Probably the most expensive bottle I've bought of beer, this is a barrel-aged version of Falling Knife's barleywine. I haven't had the non-BA barleywine, but it seems the base beer is pretty solid. I've had several BA barleywines lately, and this one seems to be well done, not super hot and boozy or over-woody from the barrel. Quite tasty!

A big thanks to Jeff for this one. 750ml bottle into a Founders snifter.

Pours surprisingly clear. Great legs, 1 finger creamy white head with poor retention. Nose is exactly what I'm looking for. Notes of molasses, brown sugar, hazelnut, green raisin, maple syrup, and barrel. Deliciously deep. Beer opens brown sugar, raisin, molasses, and maple syrup. Nutty in the middle, caramel, and more molasses. Slightly roasty, boozy, and oaky at the end with more maple and brown sugar at the finish. This one's really good. Body is full with low carbonation. Rich and boozy on the palate and goes down slightly hot and boozy. Messy, long, lingering finish.

Given how good the base beer is, this one is as good as I thought it would be. Absolutely fantastic.
