This beer is exclusively brewed for the Tigh Dearg Hotel on the remote island of North Uist in the Outer Hebridies of Scotland. The beer itself can be bought at the hotel on bottle all the year round but they only have it on cask from April through to September. Unfortunately I visited the hotel in December and the bottle was the only option.
The beer poured a lovely brown colour with a dark-cream coloured head. The nose was dominated by roasted malts, nuts and burnt caramel with a slight hint of berries.
These fragrances carried through to the taste, a bitter taste of hops is then followed by the sweet taste of caramel, hops and nuts followed again by a slightly bitter aftertaste of berries. What an amazing combination and a perfect variety of bitter and sweet flavours tingling the taste buds.
I would happily drink this all the year round if I could get it. It's almost worth taking a trip to North Uist just to try this. A truly excellent beer, better than anything the Skye brewery has produced commercially, I hope they release this to the open market.
