The ale started out in 1996 as a winter-only brew. However, the rich malty character and well-balanced hop aroma proved so popular, we decided to make it available all year round.

Creamy, full-bodied and smooth, Blaven is also somewhat deceptive – the strongest of our regular ales.

Blaven is bottled at 4.7% ABV, but available on tap at 5% ABV.

Hazy and on the lighter shade of amber. Nice lasting head which leaves plentiful spotty lace.

Earthy with a modest hop. Lightly sweet smell. Overall smell is quite mild.

I would describe this as a highly hopped Scotch Ale or more accurately, an American Amber Ale. Highly carbonated with a fuller body. The initial flavor thin, lighter barley malts. The hop kicks in without much fanfare, meaning bitter without any dimension. The aftertaste is short-lived.

500 ml bottle from the brewery in Uig; BB dated 1/2018. 4.7% ABV

Medium amber color with a good head.
Nicely aromatic with both hops and medium malts on display. Rather mild malty flavor. Mildly bitter.

Had a pint at the 'spoons in Rutherglen. Gold coloured beer with a decent head and a lemony nose with a slightly salty twang (think seaside air). This is very malt dominated for a beer of this colour, offering a sweet start, then some caramel before a fairly dry finish. The caramel becomes more apparent the more I drink.

More a hoppy golden PA or IPA in style than a Scotch Ale.
500mL bottle with freshness date. Pours a honey gold colour, with strong visible carbonation, nice cap of creamy white head, good retention and some nice lacing.

S - some floral and aromatic hops, apple, toffee, slight herbal character, some yeasty bread with a strong hop presence, very crisp and balanced. Quite nice.

T - fruitiness with citrus grapefruit, apple, some caramel malt comes through with a strong backbone, floral character, subtle sweetness and nice array of crisp fresh hoppy character. Fresh fruity, slight vanilla, pleasing. Some woodchip character.

M - refreshing, sticky hops, nice carbonation, moderate body, with a definite malt presence. Refreshing and definitely drinkable with some pine resins on the finish.

A dry hoppy ale that has a good flavour, not as complex as some American IPAs but leaning that way in terms of flavour, a very well balanced and tasty ale. Well made and slightly drying finish that lingers around with some hoppy earthy character.
