Caitlin and I visited here on 26SEP10, in part to sample their bier and food, but also to see their annual Vetus Millena middle-ages festival. They have people recreating a middle ages encampment out in their nearby field, and in their pub they were brewing this years version of Vetus Millena.
Treading up a long and winding hill deep in Franconian farm country, we came upon the large dwelling housing the owners living quarters and offices. Just beyond, to the right rear, was a small building where the restaurant and brewing are located. Further to the left are numerous tables for outside dining and drinking. Entering the pub, there are first some tables to the right under a permanent awning. Enter a door to your left and you are in a room with 4 large tables; one on the right side and 3 smaller ones left. Brick walls and timber make up the outer walls, with light-wood furniture taking up your dining area. The old-fashioned brewing equipment is at the rear, used for the once-yearly special, middle-ages recipes. The regular brewhouse, I suspect, was beyond the walls, out of sight. It was a rustic, yet simple little place. Our server was right there, and friendly. A brewhand was actively stirring the grain in the vessel, and invited me up for a look-see and some brewing info. Their menu offered 6-7 Enzensteiner biers, of which Caitlin and I sampled three. The Emmer Starkbier and Imperial were good, albeit different; the Hefeweizen a touch green. We each had a Schnitzel in Bierteig, which was very tasty. This place is out of the way - 45 minutes by train from Nürnberg, then a 30 minute uphill walk, so I reckon it won't be on everyones must-see list. But if you're out there, go for it!
Zum Wohl!!
