16-ounce can from Uptown Beer Co. Date stamp on the bottom of the can reads, "It's all about the beer! 1/13/21". Poured into a half-pint tumbler.
Look:
Murky amber brown body. The first pour yielded no foam, just some large bubbles around the edges. The second pour was an improvement, with a loose head of beige foam that left grainy lacing. The last few ounces in the can added a few floaties to the mix. Not a great looking beer.
Smell:
Tangy smoke is right up front, followed by nutty sweet malt that reminds me a little of Grape Nuts cereal. Vague estery notes and some earthy hops in the finish.
Taste:
A rather bland amber ale enhanced by pretty nice smokiness. Smoke flavor is tasty, and lasts from start to finish. Malt is moderately sweet with a nutty character like toasted multigrain bread. Unobtrusive earthy hops in the finish, along with a muted ping of aspirin-like bitterness and a faint medicinal note. Aftertaste is breadcrusty malt and soft smoke.
Feel:
Body is thin-to-medium, and the carbonation is soda-like and rough.
Overall:
Spider City Cherrywood Smoked Ale is a beer that doesn't skimp on the smoke, and that cherry wood smoke character is really quite nice. That said, the mouthfeel is rough, it has a couple off-flavors, and it isn't exactly easy on the eyes. It's more of a miss than a hit, unfortunately. I am glad they made this, and I hope it sold well enough for them to brew it again with some tweaks to the recipe. The world is a better place when it has more smoked beers.
