16 fl oz can nabbed in New Orleans, Louisiana for $4.49 USD plus tax...definitely on the higher end by local standards.
"Hazy India Pale Ale Double Dry Hopped with Citra, Heull [sic] Melon & Hallertau Blanc." 7% ABV. "Brewed and Canned by Westbrook..." Canned 01/13/21 per the bottom of my can. Label is blue-green with purple and pink hues.
Served cold into a stemless wine glass.
APPEARANCE: Looks pretty bad...has a milky murky dull copper body colour that's off-putting and looks unfiltered. Lacks any vibrance or life at all...another victim of the haze craze. Head is also lacklustre...thin and wispy with an off-white colour. At least head retention is decent at ~4 minutes.
AROMA: Melon, vague tropical fruit, pear, lychee, faint Mandarin orange syrup, 2-row, probably wheat.
A subdued aroma of mild intensity that suggests a beer with the hop pungency of a pale ale at best. Citra isn't showcased well at all judging by the aroma, and I'm not finding the white wine character I'd associate with the best beers that feature Hallertau blanc.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Melon, lemongrass twang, pear, tropical fruit rind, watermelon rind (and faint concomitant bitterness). Malt backbone is just plain 2-row...meh. Maybe there's wheat in there but it's not adding anything of note.
Lacks any Citra-induced citrus hop flavour, Hallertau Blanc white grape/white wine, floral hop flavours, et al. Huell Melon is dominant, to the beer's detriment.
Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, a biteen slimy, overcarbonated, unrefreshing. I wouldn't call it soft or creamy, but it's not rough or harsh on the palate. Not juicy or pulpy. A bit acidic, sure.
OVERALL: A shrug of an attempt at an IPA. Feels like Sun Lab emailed Westbrook an uninspired recipe and they contract-brewed it then released it soullessly in a transactional attempt to make profit. Sapped of any passion or life, with a hop profile that's shockingly underwhelming given the varietals utilized.
Honestly, after "contemplating" it, I regret buying it.
